Owning an LED light therapy device is one thing. Using it correctly — consistently, at the right frequency, in the right sequence — is what produces the visible skin improvements that justify the investment. This guide is the protocol you need to get there.
LED light therapy rewards good technique and punishes inconsistency. Following the steps below, applied to your specific device and skin type, will give you the clearest path to real results.
Before You Begin: Set Up for Success
Two things before every session:
- Clean your skin thoroughly. LED light penetrates more effectively through a clean surface. Remove all makeup, sunscreen, and product residue. A double cleanse is ideal if you wear SPF or makeup during the day.
- Do not apply heavy topicals immediately before. Light cream or toner is fine. Thick occlusive products (heavy creams, facial oils) should come after the session, not before — they can slightly reduce light transmission and are better deployed post-session when absorption is maximised.
The Complete Session Protocol
Cleanse thoroughly
As above — clean skin is the foundation. Use your regular cleanser, or a double cleanse if needed. Pat dry with a clean cloth. Do not apply any product yet.
Apply a light hydrating toner or essence (optional)
A thin layer of hydrating toner or essence on slightly damp skin is compatible with LED therapy and may enhance results — some research suggests slightly hydrated skin allows better light penetration than completely dry skin. Avoid anything with retinol, AHAs, or strong actives at this stage.
Select your wavelength and position the device
Choose your wavelength based on your goal: red (630–660nm) for anti-ageing, collagen, and glow; blue (415–445nm) for acne and bacteria; near-infrared (810–850nm) for deep repair and inflammation. Position the device at the manufacturer's recommended distance — typically 15–30cm for panels, directly against skin for masks. Protect your eyes: use the provided goggles or close your eyes during treatment.
Complete the session — still, undistracted
The session is 10–20 minutes depending on your device's irradiance. This is not multitasking time. Lie down, close your eyes, breathe slowly. The session is most effective when the body is still and relaxed — the reduced sympathetic nervous system activity during rest may enhance cellular response to the light. Use the time for breathwork, a brief body scan, or simply stillness.
Immediately apply your treatment serum
Post-session is prime absorption time. The increased circulation and cellular activity created by the LED treatment means active ingredients penetrate more deeply and are more likely to reach their target layers. Apply your most effective serum now: vitamin C in the morning, retinol or peptides in the evening.
Moisturise and (in AM) apply SPF
Seal everything in with your moisturiser. If it is morning, apply SPF as the final step — LED-treated skin is not more UV-sensitive than untreated skin, but diligent SPF use is always essential for collagen preservation and all the results you are working to build.
Frequency by Skin Concern
| Concern | Wavelength | Frequency | Minimum Duration for Results |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anti-ageing / Collagen | Red + Near-infrared | 4–5x per week | 8–12 weeks |
| Active acne | Blue (+ Red for inflammation) | 5–7x per week | 4–8 weeks |
| Redness / Rosacea | Red | 3–4x per week | 6–10 weeks |
| Dullness / Radiance | Red | 3–4x per week | 4–6 weeks |
| Post-procedure recovery | Red + Near-infrared | Daily for 2 weeks | Immediate benefit |
| General maintenance | Red | 2–3x per week | Ongoing |

Common Mistakes That Limit Results
- Using the device inconsistently — the most common reason results disappoint. Three sessions a week for three months beats three weeks of daily sessions followed by nothing.
- Not following the manufacturer's distance guidelines — too far reduces irradiance dramatically; follow the device specifications precisely.
- Applying heavy products before the session — save your oils and rich creams for after.
- Expecting results in two weeks — collagen synthesis and meaningful skin changes operate on an 8–12 week timeline. Trust the process.
- Using only one wavelength — red and near-infrared together produce synergistic benefits greater than either alone.
Our LED light therapy devices are selected for clinical-grade wavelength accuracy and the quality of the ritual they support.
