The Structure of an Evening Skincare Ritual

Step 1: Double Cleanse

Second cleanse: A water-based cleanser (gel, foam, or cream depending on your skin type) removes any remaining water-based impurities and leaves skin properly clean. Keep it gentle — the first cleanse did the heavy lifting.

Step 2: Exfoliation (2–3 times per week)

Chemical exfoliants — AHAs (glycolic, lactic acid) and BHAs (salicylic acid) — belong in the evening routine, as they increase sun sensitivity. They work by dissolving the bonds that hold dead skin cells on the surface, revealing brighter, smoother skin beneath. Start with a low concentration and infrequent use; increase gradually as your skin tolerates it. Never use a chemical exfoliant on the same night as retinol.

Step 3: Targeted Treatment Serum

Evening is ideal for your most potent actives:

  • Retinol or retinoids — the gold standard for anti-ageing, accelerating cell turnover and stimulating collagen. Start with the lowest concentration two nights per week and build gradually. Always follow with moisturiser.
  • Peptides — support collagen and elastin production; excellent for sensitive skin that cannot tolerate retinol.
  • Niacinamide — addresses uneven tone, enlarged pores, and redness; works beautifully in the evening and plays well with most other ingredients.

Step 4: Eye Treatment

Evening is particularly important for the eye area — the skin here does not produce its own oil and is highly prone to dehydration overnight. A richer eye cream or overnight treatment applied before sleep can significantly address dark circles and fine lines over time.

Step 5: Facial Massage

A few drops of a facial oil pressed over moisturiser — or used instead, for oil-tolerant skin — creates a protective barrier that prevents transepidermal water loss overnight.

The Ritual Beyond the Products

An evening skincare ritual is not just a delivery mechanism for active ingredients. It is one of the clearest signals you can send your nervous system that the day is over.
